Just as Ku cycle is not a standard bicycle, Johannes is not a standard athlete. In addition to being a husband and father of 2 teenagers, triathlete Johannes is a type 1 diabetic. His main goal was to qualify for the Ironman World Championships. Inspired as a young boy while watching the Holland triathlon in Almere, which is the oldest European long distance triathlon, his dream was born. But after his diabetes diagnosis, this was stopped by the current opinion of doctors. But by believing in his dream he started from a sprint triathlon and managed to prove otherwise by finishing the same long distance race 6 years after his diagnosis. But doing this responsibly takes time and consistency in training, nutrition, and blood sugar monitoring. Sports and dealing with diabetes are connected for Johannes, he also calls it his 4th discipline. His main goal came true in 2023. after qualifying in Texas earlier that year, he finished at the Nice Ironman World Championships. Johannes believes that there is still room for improvement so his new goal is to be the fastest possible triathlete with diabetes and also to be an example for people with diabetes by showing that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. The best is yet to come!
